Up here in the hinterlands, we are subject to what is called "ice
damming."
Ice damming occurs when ice builds up in gutters, there is more
snowfall, that snow melts, water melts into the frozen gutter. More ice builds
up, and eventually that ice will push up under the roof shingles, causing roof
damage, and possibly interior water damage as the ice melts under the shingles
and runs down the inside walls.
That's why it pays to not only keep your gutters free of ice, but
also to rake the snow off your roof. Raking snow off your roof, or at least the
bottom 3-4 feet of it, will prevent ice damming.
